Electric furnace steelmaking is a major user of graphite electrodes. The output of electric furnace steel in China accounts for about 18% of the crude steel output, and graphite electrodes for steelmaking account for 70% to 80% of the total consumption of graphite electrodes. Electric furnace steelmaking uses graphite electrodes to introduce an electric current into the furnace, and uses the high-temperature heat source generated by the electric arc between the electrode ends and the furnace charge to conduct smelting.

(1) Long production cycle. The production cycle of ordinary power graphite electrodes is about 45 days, and the production cycle of ultra high power graphite electrodes is over 70 days. However, the production cycle of graphite electrode joints that require multiple impregnations is longer.

(1) Pressurized vibration method: Pressurized vibration method requires special machine tools, and the electrode mother mold is opposite to the electrode shape. Graphite materials and forming tools are placed relative to each other during processing, leaving a certain gap. A machining fluid mixed with water and abrasive is injected into it. Ultrasonic vibration of graphite and forming tools occurs while passing through the processing fluid. Under the action of abrasive impact force, graphite is slightly peeled off to form the desired shape. The abrasive is SiC, B4C, or diamond. The coarser the abrasive, the faster the processing speed. This standard specifies the appearance, dimensions, allowable deviations, technical requirements, test methods, packaging, marking, storage, transportation, and quality certificates of graphite electrodes. This standard is applicable to ordinary power graphite electrodes made from high-quality petroleum coke, asphalt coke, and other main raw materials through molding, roasting, impregnation, graphitization, and mechanical processing. Power supply arc furnaces are used as conductive materials.

The increasing complexity of mold geometry and the diversification of product applications have led to increasing requirements for the discharge accuracy of spark machines. The advantage of graphite electrodes is that they are easy to process, have a high removal rate by electrical discharge machining, and have low graphite loss. Therefore, some group based spark machine customers have abandoned copper electrodes and switched to graphite electrodes. In addition, some electrodes with special shapes cannot be made of copper, but graphite is easier to form, and copper electrodes are heavier, making them unsuitable for machining large electrodes. These factors have led to the application of graphite electrodes by some group based spark machine customers.

Of course, after a mold factory switches from copper electrode to graphite electrode, it should first be clear how to use graphite materials and consider other relevant factors. Today, some group based spark machine customers use graphite for electrode discharge machining, which eliminates the process of mold cavity polishing and chemical polishing, but still achieves the desired surface finish. Without increasing the time and polishing process, it is impossible for copper electrodes to produce such a workpiece. In addition, graphite is divided into different grades, and using appropriate grades of graphite and spark discharge parameters for specific applications can achieve ideal machining results. If the operator uses the same parameters as copper electrodes on a spark machine using graphite electrodes, the results may be disappointing. If it is necessary to strictly control the material of the electrode, the graphite electrode can be set in a non loss state (loss less than 1%) during rough machining, but the copper electrode is not used.

(1) Ordinary power graphite electrode. Graphite electrodes with a current density of less than 17A/cm2 are allowed to be used, mainly for ordinary power electric furnaces such as steelmaking, silicon smelting, and yellow phosphorus smelting.

Graphite electrode refers to a kind of high-temperature resistant graphite conductive material made from petroleum coke and pitch coke as aggregates, coal tar pitch as binder, through raw material calcination, crushing, milling, batching, kneading, molding, roasting, impregnation, graphitization, and mechanical processing. It is called artificial graphite electrode (abbreviated as graphite electrode), which is different from natural graphite electrode prepared using natural graphite as raw material.
